8 good habits to add to your morning routine for a better life.

We all have our morning routines, whether we plan them or not. We may naturally do things every morning without even realizing it, and they then become morning habits.
How we start our morning sets the tone for the rest of our day. For example, if we start our morning by checking social media or emails, it could potentially bring up negative feelings or stress us out, all before we’ve even gotten out of bed!
That is undoubtedly not the kind of energy we want to ring in the morning. We can, on the other hand, start our morning with good habits that uplift us and help us to feel ready to take on the day!
I didn’t quite understand the importance of a good morning routine until I actually had one.
When I started adding good, healthy habits to my morning routine, I began to reap the benefits.
My morning routine is fairly simple, but very effective. It gets me in the right headspace and even boosts my energy a little.
While I am not perfect, I do have mornings when I am feeling lazy or something unexpected happens, and there goes my morning routine! I figure this one day of just doing what I want won’t make a difference, and then later I totally regret my decision to rebel first thing in the morning!
That being said, I have learned that the morning is no time to play. It is time to set myself up for a positive day! That rhyme was totally unintentional, by the way, but it is very catchy!
So, let’s get to it!
Here are the 8 habits that have become an important part of my morning routine. If you add any of these habits to your routine, they are bound to bring some positivity to your morning and improvement to your life.

Wake up early
Yes, waking up earlier is a great way to start your day!
That doesn’t mean you have to wake up at 5 am every day. But it will benefit you to start your day as early as feels comfortable for you.
There are many advantages to waking up early. There is even research showing its benefits for our mental well-being, physical health, and daily productivity.
Just think about all those times you’ve hit snooze or slept past your alarm. Your morning was probably rushed, and you felt a little stressed.
Now imagine how you would feel if you were to wake up earlier than usual, get in some morning yoga or fresh air, and have your head in the right mental space before your busy day.
A peaceful and uplifting morning leads to a more positive rest of the day.
While an ideal time for me to wake up every day would be 6 am, I usually have to wake earlier for work.
Whenever I decide I want to sleep in, sleeping past 7 usually leaves me feeling a little drowsy the rest of the day. Not to mention, my morning routine seems rushed, or I skip some of it because it’s gonna be so late once I actually get my day started.
If you aren’t a morning person, or you have to be up late for your job and want to wake up earlier, start small. Maybe wake up 30 minutes earlier for a week, then increase to an hour, and so on.
As long as you are getting a quality night’s sleep and waking up with enough time to add healthy, positive habits to your morning routine, you will be better for it.

Make your bed
Well, this is pretty much a given. Once you get out of bed, make it! Unless you have a significant other who is still in bed, you can wait to do that one later.
It is always the first thing I do. It may not sound like a big deal, but making your bed in the morning is a good way to encourage other positive behavior.
It provides an immediate sense of accomplishment, and it improves the look of your environment. Somehow, a nicely made-up bed can change the look of a room.
One simple, positive habit that you can knock off your list – make your bed!
Hydrate
Water is essential for us to live; in fact, our bodies are approximately 60% water.
When we sleep, we lose water and become slightly dehydrated.
Ideally we should sleep 7-8 hours, so that’s a full 8 hours or more without any fluids.
Therefore, drinking water first thing in the morning is crucial to rehydrate after a night’s sleep.
I keep a water bottle on my nightstand next to my bed. This way, when I wake up, it is easily accessible for me to hydrate.
It is also essential to maintain hydration throughout the day. I also keep a water bottle with me wherever I go, making it easier to get my recommended water intake.
If plain water isn’t your thing, you can try adding lemon or other flavors to make it more appealing.
While water is basically all I drink, I do like to add my own flavor!

Meditate
Meditation is a practice of focused attention and awareness. The most profound impact of meditation is that it changes your relationship with your mind.
In a world overwhelmed by noise, pressure, and distraction, meditation is one of the simplest yet most powerful tools for achieving mental clarity, resilience, and inner peace.
Meditation has become a consistent part of my morning routine and has helped me immensely.
It not only enhances your mental well-being and improves your brain function, but it also has a powerful effect on your overall health.
If you feel a little stressed or overwhelmed with your daily to-dos, try quieting your mind and doing a short meditation. You will be amazed at how much calmer and level-headed you feel.
To meditate, I sit quietly and focus on my breathing. Yes, thoughts do arise, but when they do, I just let them pass and refocus on my breathing. I may also silently repeat affirmations to myself as I breathe.
Meditation can even boost your mood or energy. When I am low on energy in the morning, I listen to a guided energy-boost meditation, and wallah! Mood boosted!
Whether you meditate for five minutes or fifty doesn’t really matter. What matters is that you are consistent. The effects will build over time and reshape how you think, feel, and live.
Move your body
Moving your body entails things such as exercise, stretching, or dancing. However you choose to move your body is up to you.
Exercise has numerous benefits, including improving our mood and reducing anxiety.
Not up for exercise first thing in the morning? You could try stretching or doing some relaxing yoga.
The important thing is to move your body, however you may do so.

On mornings when I have more time and don’t have to work, I like to go for a walk on the beach or surrounded by nature. Not only is walking a great form of exercise, but doing so in or around nature is sure to raise your vibration!

Whether it’s stretching or another form of exercise, moving your body in the morning will help wake you up, induce feel-good emotions, and set you up for a positive start to your day.
Listen to uplifting music or a self-improvement book
A great way to get yourself into a positive mindset to start the day is to listen to music you love or read (or listen to) personal growth or self-improvement books.
Listening to self-improvement books in the morning motivates me to be better and do better.
I listen to books on the Audible app as I get myself ready, and sometimes I change it up and listen to my favorite songs.
The Audible app makes it easy for me to listen while completing other tasks. I have knocked off so many books on my list in no time. It’s easy to use, and it’s a great way to improve yourself while being productive.
Here’s a list of some of my favorite books I’ve listened to on the Audible app:
- You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero
- The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
- The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy
- Good Vibes Good Life by Vex King
- The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins
You could even listen to or repeat positive affirmations in the morning. Say affirmations that resonate with you, and say them as though you believe them!

Look up to par
There is some truth to the saying “when you look good, you feel good.” And when you feel good, you are more likely to show up as your best self.
Taking care of your skin is essential if you want to look your best. Have a good skincare routine that makes you look and feel beautiful.
It’s taken a lot of trial and error for me to find a skincare routine that helps my skin look its best. If you’re interested, you can read about my Simple Skincare Routine to Look and Feel Beautiful, and some of the affordable skincare products I recommend.
And of course, the perfect outfit will help!
When you put on an outfit, how does it make you feel? You should feel good and like what you see when you look in the mirror.
That doesn’t mean you always have to dress up. Some days, I don’t feel it. I put on an outfit that I loved the last time I wore it, but this time, not so much. I may not be feeling my best that day, so changing up my outfit to something that I feel good in is important.
Whether it’s a dress, workout clothes, or jeans and a t-shirt, make sure it’s an outfit that you feel good in.
Eat a healthy breakfast
Many say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. For me, I’ve noticed that eating a healthy breakfast encourages me to eat healthier for the rest of the day.
Eating breakfast kick-starts your metabolism and boosts your mood and energy. Not to mention, if you plan on working out in the morning, breakfast is a must.
Protein is the most important macronutrient. So eating a high-protein breakfast is essential, especially if you exercise. Combine it with healthy fats and fiber, and you’ve got a nutrient-packed breakfast.
Chances are, if you eat a healthy breakfast, you’re more likely to make healthier choices throughout the day. Secondly, a high-protein, nutrient-packed breakfast should reduce the urge to overeat.

My typical go-to options for breakfast are a hard-boiled egg, Greek yogurt with chia seeds, flax seeds, and fruit, and a green smoothie with protein.
For my green smoothie, I mix water, greens such as spinach and kale, diced avocado, and fruit with Truvani Protein Powder. It makes for a nutrient-rich, high-protein breakfast!
Truvani Organic Plant-Based Protein Powder is my favorite, and it only has 5 ingredients. I add it to my smoothie, and I’ve even drunk it mixed with just water. The taste is probably the main reason I stick with this powder. It is a little pricy, but I like it so much I consider it worth the money.
I always pay attention to how I feel after I eat. If I feel good after eating something, I know it was a good choice. On the other hand, if I feel tired or my mood changes afterward, I know what foods to limit in my diet.
Research shows a correlation between the foods we eat and how we feel and behave. Highly processed foods cause energy crashes, inflammation, and negative impacts on our mood. Nutrient-rich whole foods help promote a positive mindset and sustained energy.
So, if you want to start your day with a positive mindset and feel-good energy, be sure to eat a nutrient-rich, high-protein breakfast!
A positive morning will set you up for a positive rest of the day
Your morning routine sets you up for the rest of the day.
So how do you want your day to go? Do you want it to feel stressful and rushed? Or would you prefer to feel more at ease and in the moment?
Yes, things may go wrong throughout your day, or a slew of other things could happen that turn your feel-good morning into a not-so-positive rest of the day. That’s just life as we know it.
Nevertheless, having a good morning routine that puts you in a positive mindset will help you face challenges with greater ease and negativity with fewer negative emotions.
You can choose how you want to feel in the morning and throughout the day. If you decide you want to feel good and have a positive day, start your morning that way.

Adding good, healthy habits to your morning will only benefit you. They will improve your life and help you become a better person.
Do you want to be the best version of yourself? Start in the morning with these simple habits for a better life. A good morning routine will empower you to become better and keep on evolving.
Life is always changing, and so should we. We should continue to improve ourselves and our lives if we want to reach our full potential.
